The Waalhaven, also known as Nieuwe Haven, is a port in the Dutch city of Nijmegen. The port is located on the Waal, just past the Nieuwe Hezelpoort and right next to the Railway Bridge.

The harbor was constructed in 1852 and 1853 as a replacement for the Oude Haven, [1] which was located at the center of the current Waalkade, and was an industrial harbor. The port had that function until the mid-1990s. Since then it has been a refuge and mooring place for commercial shipping. There are also some houseboats. In the 1930s, the port was expanded westward as part of the job creation. In the same period the name was changed from Nieuwe Haven to Waalhaven. [2]

Management is in the hands of the municipal port service. The harbor is 380 meters long and between 95 and 200 meters wide. The depth varies between 4.50 and 5.75 meters. [3]

Around the port is somewhat outdated industry and a slaughterhouse. Within the framework of the Koerswest urban renewal project, this must make way for homes under the name Waalfront. The printing works and offices of De Gelderlander were also located directly on the Waalhaven until 2011. [4]
