The French destroyed Cochem almost completely with its castle in the 17th century. Only 3 houses survived this disaster. One of them is the Alte Thorschenke, built in 1652.

As one of the oldest hotels in Germany, built in 1332, the Alte Thorschenke has welcomed guests from all over the world for centuries. Emperor Napoleon and Monarch Maria Theresia of Austria, who visited her German cousin in the 17th century, stayed in these historic walls and made a stopover in Cochem on the Moselle. She liked Cochem so much that she had one of her personal beds set up at the Hotel Alten Thorschenke. thorschenke.de
