Mascaret is a beautiful, exceptional moment of experiencing nature. You must have seen this once. This phenomenon is truly exceptional in Europe and... in Belgium it can only be seen on the Durme.
Would you like to see Mascaret yourself?
From the middle of this historic Mira bridge, you can see the mascaret rolling in from under the N41 bridge (expressway bridge) slightly further away.
When?
The chance of a strong mascaret is greatest from the day before the full moon or new moon and the three following days.
What is 'Mascaret'?
The change from sloping to rising water, under the influence of the tides in the Durme, normally occurs almost inconspicuously and slowly. But some days this happens in a flood. Depending on various elements, that wave can be higher or lower, from a few cm to 30 cm. Such a tidal wave was given the French name 'mascaret'.
