The high medieval castle, built over the southern slope of the Ilm, was the ancestral castle of the Lords of Tannrode, first mentioned in 1174. The extensive castle complex probably dates back to the 12th century, it is mentioned in 1194 (Wikipedia).

What I particularly liked was that I was there very late and they let me up the tower, which is a very nice highlight.
