At the foot of the Drei Zinnen, the Rienz begins at 2180m and after about 80 km it flows into the Eisack near Brixen.
While its upper course leads through the Höhlensteintal valley, which is characterized by dolomite rock, the middle course is mainly river gravel. However, its lower course makes its way through an imposing gorge in which Brixen granite and quartz phyllite dominate.
In addition to a few small and medium-sized power plants, the waters of the Rienz also feed the three large ones in Bruneck, near St. Lorenzen and in Brixen.
