The ordinance establishing the nature park in the Harz Mountains came into effect on December 31, 2010, thus creating the fifth nature park in Thuringia.
It covers an area of 267 km².
The South Harz Tourism Association (Südharzer Tourismusverband e. V.) manages the park in coordination with the Kyffhäuser Nature Park.
The nature park encompasses parts of the southern slopes of the Lower Harz Mountains, the gypsum karst landscape of the adjacent Zechstein belt, and the transition zone to the North Thuringian Bunter Sandstone region.
