Immediately across the road from St Mary's Church (a destination in its own right: St Mary’s is the ancient parish church of Walthamstow and its oldest building, with foundations dating to the 12th century) is the 'Ancient House'.

The Ancient House in Walthamstow Village is a timber-framed hall, believed to have been originally constructed in 1435. Although the building was continually used for both domestic and commercial purposes until 2000.
