Since then, the main station has been fundamentally rebuilt twice. The first time in 1904, because the capacity of the old station was no longer sufficient. Since then it has been a central station in the German railway network. In the course of this construction work, the tracks that were previously at ground level were raised so that the increasing traffic from Gelsenkirchen to Bochum could pass the main station unhindered.
