At the time the Hartberg parish was founded – the first documented mention of a priest dates back to 1157 – there was a small Romanesque church with a square choir. It was built on the ruins of a Roman building. After a series of alterations, a three-aisled Romanesque basilica followed. Around 1460, extensive remodeling took place. The church received a new choir and a new nave with the star-ribbed vault that still exists today.
