The Fens area is located in the northern Ardennes and consists of a series of small moors that extend south of the Vecquée, in the municipality of Stoumont. Once much larger, these moors were largely drained and planted with spruce trees (*the Prussian tree) from the end of the 19th century onwards, so that today only a part of this pristine Fens landscape remains or is being recultivated as part of the reclamation process.

If you are looking for a scenic and historic hike in the Belgian Ardennes, you should visit the Fagnes de la Vecquee. This is a large area of restored heathland, where conifer plantations have been replaced by hardy cow-grazed heathland, ponds and bogs.
