In 1908 the city of Gelsenkirchen bought the site. Ten years earlier, the - initially Protestant - cemetery in Heßler near the former colliery had already been occupied. On Monday, August 11th, the "Emscher Zeitung" reports: "Following the service, the inauguration of our cemetery took place on Sunday morning. The first dead to be brought to rest were a young woman who, in her youth, barely 30 years old, pneumonia was dragged away, and a baby of five months. "
