The order of the Cistercians founded the former abbey in 1233. Be sure to see the abbey church from the 13th century (the oldest remains) and the abbess' house from the 16th century with its two arched doors: the Baroque frames and sculptures are beautiful. It was once one of the most important women's monasteries in Flanders.

Even today, learning and studying is still going on here - but no longer for the glory of God. Students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts walk through the ancient cloisters, and you can browse through old documents in the city archives.

In 1233, Arnulf IV, Baron of Pamele, donated land on the eastern bank of the Scheldt in Ham (Pamele) to the abbey of Maagdendale for the construction of a new Cistercian abbey. The abbey buildings and church were constructed during the 13th century. In 1791, the abbey was dissolved and in 1826 the buildings were used as army barracks. Of the former abbey, only a part of the church, the abbess' house with guest quarters and gatehouse have been preserved.
