The poet Emile Verhaeren died tragically: when he got off a train, he fell under the wheels and was run over.
The French state wanted to erect an honorary grave for him in the Panthéon in Paris, but the family refused. She had him buried in the Adinkerke military cemetery in the middle of the First World War. After a stopover in Wulveringen, he has been in his home village of Sint-Amands since 1927.
