The complex formed by the monasteries of Suso (high) and Yuso (low) was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. Its value lies not only in its architectural heritage, with its Gothic cloister or royal sarcophagi, but also in its cultural heritage by housing the codex where a monk wrote the first words in Spanish.

The first monastery dates back to the 11th century, but the complex and the entire town have evolved over the centuries until reaching the splendor and atmosphere that they offer today.

If we do it with respect, we can walk through the monastery with our bikes on one side and enjoy this special place.

Monasterio de Santa María la Real: this monastery is a gem. Legend has it that it was founded in 1044 by King Garcia Sanchez III on the cave to which a falcon had led him, which contained a statue of the virgin. The buildings that you still see today date from the 15th century. Worth seeing are the finely carved sarcophagi of the kings, the Raft Monument of the Doña Blanca and the Gothic cloister where historical theatrical performances are staged in June. A 13th century statue of the Virgin takes center stage in a Plateresco altarpiece.

Don't miss the choir stalls (1495) and the lace-like masonry of the cloister.
