The Chinese temple was built in the late 1920s. The building without corners and edges was used as a public lavatory at the time. Today there is an artist's workshop and gallery in the building, which has a slightly Far Eastern touch.

We are at the end of the 1920s - the time when Emden came to a temple, the Chinese temple. You stand in front of it and you can be amazed. Admittedly, this building breaks with ideas. It's not what you'd expect in a temple. Despite its name, it has never served as a sanctuary to any religion. To be honest, its original purpose was very profane. The small round house with the special roof was built as a kiosk and public toilet - back then it was still called a public toilet.

As everyday its purpose, the building itself is so unusual. Without rough edges, the roof like a magic hat, supported by winding columns, the Chinese temple is one of the witnesses of the expressionist architectural style in Emden. On your way through the city, you will come across more of these "Expressionists" made of dark brick with the AOK building and the former Apollo Theater in the street Zwischen Zwei Bleichen or with the Herrentorschule in the street Am Herrentor - designed by the city architect Walter Heim and Walter Luckau. The Chinese temple, the Boltentorbrücke on which it stands, and the street lamp on the opposite side were created on Luckau's desk. As was popular in the design of tableware, in literature and architecture, he gave them a slightly Asian touch. This is how Emden got a Far Eastern-themed public lavatory and the Chinese temple probably got its name. The building even has a second nickname: it was named after the mayor at the time, Wilhelm Mützelburg

      called the "Mützelburg".

Incidentally, the original copper roof did not survive the Second World War. In early April 1940, it was covered on the orders of the Nazis. As the newspapers reported at the time, the valuable metal was to go into the birthday donation made by the German people to the Führer. After that, the building stayed bare upstairs for a long time. The city of Emden then put a new hat on him in the early 80s, which, however, looks a little different than the original.

Today the Chinese temple is an artist workshop and gallery. It forms a unit with the bridge and the street lamp, together the three are a cultural monument.
