The age of the Bassumer Stiftsmühle cannot be precisely determined - but it was probably built at the same time as the monastery. In a log book of the monastery from 1729 it says: "This monastery mill stood for 800 years" - accordingly it dates back to the 10th century.

Like all watermills, the Stiftsmühle had to be constantly improved and repaired: although it was rebuilt in 1688, it was in disrepair again in 1732, so that its groundwork and waterworks had to be renewed. In 1881 the half-timbered house was demolished and replaced by today's three-story brick building. In 1926 the turbine was replaced by a more modern one, which could also be used to generate electricity. The grinding operation was finally shut down completely in 1962.
The mill, which was no longer in use, burned down in 1989, but was rebuilt only two years later and has been used by the Diakonisches Werk ever since.

The mill cannot be visited.
