The Zuurhoek is a large sand extraction lake right next to the Molenmeers that attracts large numbers of water birds. This area is not accessible to hikers for the time being.

The path runs between the Zuurhoek and the Molenmeers.
Nature reserve along the Zuurhoek and the Molenmeers. An idyllic piece but note closed between 01/04 and 31 October. In addition, only allowed for walkers (no pets).

De Molenmeers was officially opened in 2009. It is a former sand extraction pit that lies along the strongly meandering Oude Kale and near the Ghent-Bruges canal. From the area you have a view of the Van Vlaenderensmolen, which was founded in 1905 to replace a post mill that was already there before 1591. In 1973 it was converted into a home after restoration. However, due to major renovation works, the mill can no longer turn or grind. The environment of the mill was protected in 1984 as a village view, a landscape to which the Molenmeers also belong.

In addition to the deep lake, the Molenmeers consists of a moist meadow, a wooded side and a poplar grove. These different biotopes each have their own value. The water is very popular with grebe and coot, but tufted duck and kingfisher are also often present here. Remarkable marsh plants such as marsh Marigold and many species of sedge and rushes grow around the lake. On sunny summer days you will often find dozens of dragonflies and damselflies on the banks of the river.

A bridge over the Oude Kale provides a connection with the Zuurhoek located on the other side of the Oude Kale.
