The Trappist monastery "Uelingsheide" was built in 1884. It managed 80 hectares of agricultural land. The mother house of the founding monks was in Westmalle / Belgium. After the inauguration in 1887, more than a hundred monks from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands lived in Ulingsheide. On June 15, 1888, the monastery became an independent priory and on September 18, 1933, it became an abbey. The abbey church was planned and built in the 1920s by the architect F. Stoks and brother Adelbertus Koevoets. The consecration took place on July 24, 1934. On April 21, 1943, a major fire destroyed the monastery buildings with the exception of the abbey church, which was consecrated again on August 20, 1948 by Abbot Aloysius van de Laar after being rebuilt.

After a personnel decline, the abbey, to which nine monks still belonged, was merged with the Echt Abbey by the General Chapter on September 21, 2002 at the request of the convent. The remaining monks moved into a small new building in 2006. In 2007 they left the former monastery grounds, most of which belonged to the R.K. Hulpverleningsfonds in Venlo was sold. The Stichting Emmaus Feniks took over the monastery as a tenant, which houses a living and working community for the homeless.

Today there is a monastery shop and restaurant with a beautiful beer garden.
