Summerhouse is a tucked away oasis: a garden courtyard nestled into the north side of Capitol Hill, surrounded by decorative red brick walls. Completed in 1881, it was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, America's foremost landscape architect, whose Central Park in New York is his best-known work.

Summerhouse's floor plan is hexagonal, the walls are pierced by barred windows, so that the association with Chinese gardens is obvious. Inside there is a fountain and a water grotto, giving the garden courtyard the popular name "the grotto". A cool retreat on a sultry Washington summer day.

A second summerhouse was originally planned on the south side of the Capitol, but never came to fruition.
