    Hiking

A poignant vestige of the area’s slate mining heritage. These mines produced around 200 million slates from the 1830s until the beginning of the 20th century. Conditions for the workers, who lived on site during the week, were grim. Average life expectancy was just 44 years. What remains today is a mixture of the barracks and workhouses.

Slate was mined here above and below ground from about 1830. The remote location proved difficult, and a series of financial troubles hampered the quarry. It shut during WW1 and reopened afterwards until finally closing in 1948. At it's peak, this was the second-largest underground slate mine in North Wales.

Today you can explore the spoil and some of the old machinery.

A great step back in time when visiting this old miners village. Great place to explore in the Moelwyn range.
