Altburgtal Nature Reserve

Around 400,000 million years ago, the Devonian primeval rushed through, leaving its fossil traces here. The Schwindbach in the water-permeable limestone is lost as if by magic in the underground and reappears after several hundred meters.
The Celts already appreciated the Altburgtal here in Schönecker Switzerland and built their Celtic Fliehburg on steeply sloping dolomite rocks.
The lime-lean grassland, which is under conservation, shows the typical vegetation in the Eifel over a hundred years ago, just as the regional, rural management gave rise to the landscape-defining image of the Eifel over centuries. The history of the Eifel Forest can be clearly understood in many places.
