As the inscription on the memorial cross suggests, the last battle of World War II is remembered here. According to reports, nearly 80,000 people died in the vicinity. On the German side, the Wenck Army stood here.

The impressive memorial was erected in 1994. The Ferch Local History Society is researching the fighting that took place in the Ferch-Seddin-Michendorf area during the Battle of Berlin.

The PNN and the Tagesspiegel reported on this in 2009 and 2010. I also found the figure "80,000 dead" there. The local history society considers this number too high.

Perhaps the number also refers to the Halbe Pocket, where only 25,000 of 100,000 German soldiers survived? Halbe is only 50 km to the east, and the escape attempts took place to the west.

In any case: The suffering and deaths caused by a senseless war that we Germans unleashed are unimaginable!!!

This memorial is certainly little known, as is knowledge of the Battle of Berlin, which led to the end of World War II in Europe. Further explanations are available online:

100,000 were encircled in Halbe, of which 25,000 survived.

Does the cross have anything to do with this battle?

Halbe is only 50 km away, and those who escaped the encirclement fled westward.
