According to some sources, the history of the Wedeler Mühle goes back to the 8th century, which could make it the oldest watermill in the Benelux. However, there are no archaeological finds that would confirm this. Even if the history is ancient, the mill is ultra-modern and contemporary: In 1980, the wooden mill wheel was replaced by a metal wheel and a generator was installed to generate electricity with the mill wheel.

The former mill building of the Wedelse Molen was made of clay and wood and was replaced by the current building in 1765. Today you will find a restaurant in it.

You can read the history of the watermill above. Be sure to take a look inside as well. It is an inn with many old materials and elements of the mechanism of the mill. A real collection of 'stone' beer steins hangs from the ceiling. For enthusiasts, a real local atmosphere, a good laugh with the manageress and enjoyed our stop with all kinds of little reminders of how things used to be. Near the "border" with Kleine Brogel (Peer) and on the Dommel.

As early as the beginning of the 8th century (around 710), mention was made of a mill on the Dommel, probably the Wedelse Mill. The Wedelse Molen would therefore be one of the oldest water mills in the Low Countries! This undershot water mill, together with the two other Overpelt water mills, the Bemvoortse Molen and the Kleine Molen, was sold to the abbey of Floreffe in 1259. Until the end of the 18th century, the abbey of Floreffe remained in possession of the extensive property in Overpelt with the three water mills. These mills had the ban right, whereby the dependents were obliged to have their grain ground at the designated mill. Around 1765, the former mill house made of clay and wood was replaced by the current building. After the French Revolution, the abbey properties were sold publicly. The mill has been owned by the Martens brewery since 1964. In 1974 the building was converted into a tavern. The mill name means: mill at the wedel, a pond or swamp created by a dike breach or the overflowing of the dikes.
