The Bergedorfer Gehölz is a park-like urban forest with an old mixed forest stand on the eastern edge of the Hamburg metropolitan region. The forest consists mainly of oak and beech trees, but also of conifers such as spruce, pine, and Douglas fir.The post-glacial valleys that open towards the Bille River give the recreational forest an interesting hilly surface structure. Together with the narrow and well-maintained network of paths, the Bergedorfer Gehölz is an ideal area for long walks and short excursions. A great hiking, cycling, and mountain biking terrain
with plenty of ups and downs.The approximately two-square-kilometer forest lies between the Hamburg district of Bergedorf and the Holstein municipality of Wentorf, with the state border running right through the forest. The forest is bordered to the north by the Bille River,
and to the east by the Werntorfer Feldmark (fields). To the west and south, the Bergedorf residential district borders the forest.The woodland, known in the 17th century as the Gestüte (Middle Low German for bush), originally consisted primarily of an oak forest.Today, it consists of some spruce, but also a lot of hardwoods such as beech, birch, linden, and oak. The terrain is quite steep by northern German standards, as it extends from the Bille lowlands to the Hohe Geest. The highest elevations are the Fuchsberg on the Wentorf side and the Doktorberg in the Bergedorf part of the forest. Both "hills" are about 50 meters high. A 1,000-meter-long toboggan run was built on the Doktorberg in the 1930s.Here in the woodland, Bergedorf lives up to its name when it comes to mountains.Although they are only hills, the gradients are not easy in some sections by local standards.
