Until 26 May 1967, freight trains ran daily from Zwolle via Assen and Gasselternijveen to Stadskanaal. After that, these trains started running via Onnen and Veendam. The stations of Gasselternijveen, Gasselte and Gieten were served from Stadskanaal.

Between 1975 and 1977, an attempt was made to turn the line into a museum railway. An association, the Noordnederlandse Spoorbaan Assen-Rolde (NMM), was founded for this purpose. In 1976, this became the Stichting NMS. However, after three years, insufficient capital could be raised for these plans and the end of the railway line was near.

The railway line, including the railway bridge over the Deurzerdiep, was completely dismantled in 1977. In the Asserstraat between Rolde and Gieten, rails were laid in the road at the Eexterhalte in 2007 during the reconstruction of the road as a reminder of the railway line. St Andrew's crosses on either side suggest a real railway crossing.

Just before the bridge over the Deurzerdiep is this remnant of the railway embankment over which the train used to run between Assen and Stadskanaal.
