Famagusta's port became a major Crusader bridgehead during the Third Crusade (1189-1192) due to its proximity to the Holy Land. Their newly conquered territories on the Syrian-Palestinian coast, however, remained unstable structures that soon gave in to pressure from the Muslims. When Acre, the last Christian bastion in Palestine, fell in 1291, many trading houses moved their businesses from there to Famagusta, and profitable trade flows were diverted here. Famagusta was booming. No other port in the Levant could compete with the wealthy Cypriot trading metropolis for the next century and a half.
