You are in the middle of a pronounced gypsum hump landscape and can see as far as the southern Harz foothills. The entire "Sattelköpfe" nature reserve is known for its valuable dry grassland biotopes on which numerous rare plants, especially orchid and gentian species, grow.

The saddle heads, which are located directly on the Karst hiking trail, can be hiked from Hörningen, Mauderode or Gudersleben. Nearby is the "Kelle", the oldest natural monument in the southern Harz karst area.
