On the northern wall of the cemetery at St. Corneli there is a yew tree, which is considered the oldest tree in Vorarlberg and one of the oldest in Austria.
This natural monument has a circumference of more than five meters at the foot, which already indicates its venerable age. Based on a legend that tells that the Blessed Mother stopped at this yew on the way from Einsiedeln to St. Gerold, the bark of the tree was said to have healing properties for all kinds of diseases.
Unfortunately, this caused many believers to cut off bark, which over time damaged the yew very much. Because a lightning strike also caused great damage, one had to reckon with the death of the tree. A renovation of the "millennial yew" some twenty years ago now ensures that this tree, which is an inseparable part of St. Corneli, will be preserved for many years to come.
