With an area of 32 hectares, this is the largest fortress of the NHW. It was built in 1867-1869 as part of the forward line forts at Utrecht. [1] This advanced line served to close off the Houtense Vlakte. This area is somewhat higher than the surrounding area and could therefore not be completely inundated.

The fort was further east from the city. It served to prevent or reduce artillery attacks on works further back and the city. In a successful enemy attack, the retreating Dutch troops were absorbed into the fort. After a regrouping, a possible Dutch offensive was possible again. The neighboring Fort Vechten served the same purpose.

In December 1868 the contract for the construction was signed and P.J. Lienders from Middelburg was the contractor of the work. [2] The implementation costs amounted to 766,242 guilders and an additional 142,338 guilders was added for the expropriation of the land. [2]

The fort was built according to the modern polygonal (polygonal) system. The front is 360 meters long and faces the road between Zeist and De Bilt. [3] The right side front is 240 meters long and the left 195 meters. [3] The keel front, or the rear of the fort, is 420 meters long with a recessed angle. [3] It is equipped with flank batteries and a caponiere so that the canals around the fort could be covered with cardboard grenades. These were fired from 15 cm caliber smoothbore howitzers. The keel ditch (back canal) was fired on with cannons that were set up in the reduit. When it was built, the fortress had two entrance posts that were converted into a guard building during the modernization in 1879.

The Rhijnauwen fort was built from 1867 to 1869 and was the largest fortress of the New Dutch Waterline. Before the Second World War, the fort was expanded with a G-casemate and several group shelters. In 1914-1918 and 1939-1940, the fort was mobilized.

The Germans used the fort as a munitions depot and from 1942 as a place of execution. Between 250 and 500 people are killed at the fort, including many Belgians. They were buried in nameless graves on unknown places by a NSB undertaker. Only 55 names are known. These are written on a memorial in the fort grounds.

The fort can only be visited by guided tour. Every 4 May, Remembrance Day, is a ceremony at the fort.
