The view at Cranenweyer in Kerkrade offers a beautiful view of the Cranenweyer dam, which was constructed in the 1950s to limit flooding in the region. It is the only dam in the Netherlands. The lake is part of the Worm catchment area and is located in a landscape of forest and meadow, popular with hikers and nature lovers. In the mid-20th century, the Kerkrade coal mines discharged their polluted wastewater into the surrounding waterways. These included the Ham and Domaniale mines.
