The history of the Neo-Renaissance villa in Kamen is closely linked to the drilling engineer Carl Julius Winter, who founded his company as a boilermaker and civil engineering company in 1851. His company, which successfully drilled for brine and coal, was located directly at the new Kamen train station. In 1871 the company expanded and Winter developed into the largest civil engineering contractor in Germany. In 1886 his son, Julius Ferdinand Gustav Winter, took over the business and founded the potash drilling company “Wintershall” in 1894. In 1898, Julius Winter had a representative villa built in the neo-Renaissance style right next to his factory. This villa, decorated with decorative fields, palmettes and a three-part stepped gable, was considered the “most beautiful villa in Kamen”.

The villa experienced many changes of ownership, but remained largely unchanged externally. In 1940 it became the property of the manufacturer Karl Lechleitner. The Lechleitner family, originally immigrants from the mines, brought the business and the villa into the third generation. The building suffered damage during the Second World War, but was renovated in 1976 by Dr.-Ing. Karl Lechleitner restored it and returned it to its original condition. Today the villa is still considered a jewel of the city of Kamen.
