Bedford House was the name given to Chateau Rosendael, which stood nearby before it was destroyed in the Great War. Chateau Rosendael was a large country house situated in a small wooded park surrounded by a moat.
Chateau Rosendael was used by field ambulances during the war years and also served as headquarters. Gradually, this small cemetery took over the entire site. After the Armistice, Bedford House Cemetery was expanded with 3,324 graves. Soldiers from the vast Ypres Salient were reburied here. Approximately two-thirds of the graves remain unidentified.
