Mautern an der Donau is a municipality with 3,482 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2021) on the southern bank of the Danube in Lower Austria opposite Krems/Stein.

After the final conquest of the Avar Empire by the Frankish Emperor Charlemagne in 803, the former fort area was secured and repopulated. The resulting place was now in the area of the Bavarian Eastland.
