Approx. 10m high basalt wall in column formation. This impressive geological object today forms a special habitat for animals and plants that have adapted to it.

Around 13 million years ago, glowing magma emerged from the interior of the earth and spread like a mushroom in the tertiary layers (sand and clay).

The formation of the columns is due to the shrinkage processes during the cooling and crystallization phase. Such basalt columns can be found not only in Bühren, but also in many places in the north Hessian and southern Lower Saxony mountainous regions where basalt has been exposed by mining.
