Dörtel was first mentioned in documents in 1221 as "Törtal". The Teutonic Order gained authority through ownership of the estate. The place became famous because of a wild bath. The water was used for bathing and drinking. However, the spring was buried by a cloudburst in 1689 and fell into oblivion. In 1927, Dörtel's landmark, the bell tower, was built.
