The church suffered damage from the 1997 earthquake but after the works carried out it was reopened for worship and is still a destination for pilgrims and tourists who from the hill enjoy the spectacle of the landscape of the Umbrian Valley and the coolness of the park even when it is closed.

The church, whose first stone was laid on 16 January 1583, was built in response to the miraculous events that occurred thanks to the Virgin at the hill called Colpulito, first in 1462 and subsequently in 1582. The events occurred around a prodigious Majesty where it seems that a reaper, nicknamed Bollone, obtained a miraculous healing from the Virgin.
