Built to aid shipping in the 1860's, it's unusual in that it remained unpainted and is a plain brick tower. This was one of the last lighthouses to be automated in 1998. There is also a modern GPS base station on the site.

Impressive lighthouse on the edge of the Isle of Lewis. We had our picnic on a rock right beside the lighthouse. Could be worse 😉

Cycling

The Butt of Lewis is the most northerly point of Lewis Island. The headland extends into the North Atlantic offering stunning views. The light house here is frequently battered by heavy storms and swells. You will also find some of the oldest rocks in Europe here formed up to 30,000 million years ago!
