The Hoogstraten beguinage was founded before 1380. In the 16th century it was repeatedly ravaged by fire. During all that time, the court was limited to just a few cottages surrounded by a stone wall in 1534. In 1553 there were a total of fourteen houses on the beguinage. Half a century later there were only two beguines. The great heyday of the beguinage lies between the second half and the end of the 17th century. The number of beguines then rose to 160, so that additional houses had to be built. They also started building a new church. From the second half of the 18th century the number of beguines gradually decreased until in 1972 the last beguine left the beguinage for good.

A place of tranquility in the busy center of Hoogstraten.

An excellent place to escape the busy life.

Historical interpretation: The first chapel was founded in 1381. This Baroque church was built between 1680 and 1687. The Beguinage itself originally dates from 1380. During a fierce fire on Maundy Thursday 1506, the Beguinage was completely destroyed and only the chapel remained. During the 17th century, this chapel was replaced by the current Baroque church.

In the Baroque facade you will see a niche with braziers and a pediment in which a wooden statue of the Mother of God with Child was placed at the end of the 15th century. Above the door you will see a carved sign with angel heads. In the niches there are statues of Saint Peter and Saint Joanna of Valois.

The church has a lavish, white-painted interior. The black and white marble floor contains several gravestones from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
The church has numerous statues. The Our Lady of painted wood dates from the 15th century. A wooden crucifix dates from the 16th century. There are also statues of the saints to admire.
