The Bootjesven is a natural fen that was deepened for peat extraction. The guards of the Colony used to come for a swim with their family at the Bootjesven. There is currently a swimming ban. This location with a small beach and beautiful old stately trees is an idyllic spot for a picnic or just to relax. You can just cool down to the ankles or calves.

It is wonderful to have a picnic at Bootjesven and Konik horses graze on the moors on the north side. And Carrot has a story…Root Colony was first a free agricultural colony. Poor families lived in separate farms with their own piece of land that they had to work. That was not easy for people without experience. The soil was not very fertile and strict rules applied.
