Den Aerd is approximately 30 hectares in size, of which 18 hectares consists of a large sand extraction pit.

That well was created during the works on the E-10 highway (now E-19), which was opened in 1972. The rest of the area consists of forest, shrubs and grassland.

You can go horse riding and walking there, but it is especially popular with fishermen.

        Bird-rich area

Up to 1000 water birds spend the winter on and along the pond each year. Most of these are mallards and to a lesser extent gadwalls, tufted ducks, coots and various gull species. In early spring, the area is important for migrating waders, including many oystercatchers, black-tailed godwits and lapwings. The stones on the east side of the pond are popular as a sleeping and gathering place. Some of these waders stay a little longer and breed in the surrounding agricultural area. The most important breeding birds are grebes, kingfishers, mockingbirds and whitethroats.

        Walking, riding, but especially fishing

A walking and riding path has been provided, but fishermen in particular enjoy themselves here. Commonly caught species are roach, carp, tench, perch, eel and pike. The river fishing law applies to this pond. Fishing with boats or 'belly boats' is not permitted. The use of bait boats is permitted.
