The emergence of the lake goes back to a quarry originally located here. As early as 1477, quarries near Alt Olvenstedt were mentioned in connection with the construction of the Magdeburg cathedral. Greywacke was mined in the quarries until the end of the 19th century.
After the closure of the quarry, however, today's Sternsee was not filled, unlike most other fractures in the area, not filled. By flowing groundwater formed the lake, which quickly became a popular bathing area. In 1914, founded in the Bördedorf Olvenstedt, to whose district the lake belonged, the swimming club star. There was already a first bath house.
After the end of the First World War, the first bathhouse was demolished and a two-storey house with sun terrace was built. There was also a non-swimmer pool, tracks with starting blocks and a clubhouse. Also a sandy beach was heaped up.

The quality of the water was ensured, as a neighboring nursery took water from the lake through a pumping station, constantly adding new groundwater.
The bathers came mainly from Olvenstedt - mainly from the built in the thirties, outdoor areas of the village - and from Magdeburg. Business people should have been represented above average. The old-established Olvenstedter preferred the nearer to the village in Bernsdorfs break bathhouse.
After the Second World War, the swimming club ceased to exist. The municipality Olvenstedt took over the plant. The bathhouse enjoyed great popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, but lacked funds for the preservation of the plant. The official bathing establishment was therefore discontinued. The buildings and furnishings fell into disrepair.

In the 1980s, the new district of Magdeburg Neu Olvenstedt was built in the immediate vicinity of the lake, which is mainly characterized by buildings in Plattenbauweise and temporarily counted more than 30,000 inhabitants. The lake, surrounded by steep banks, was now regarded as a source of danger and therefore surrounded by a fence. The neglect continued, however.
In the mid-1990s, the city of Magdeburg decided to make the lake environment a green space. The remains of the bathhouse were demolished in 1995. A path was built on the shore of the lake and benches were set up.
The Sternsee stands today as a natural monument under protection.
It is claimed that a Trabant and a tank from the Second World War should lie in the lake. These rumors were also fueled by rising in the 1990s repeatedly rising oil bubbles.
