They are definitely old, the foundations of the Dominican monastery, founded in 1291, on which the building known today as the "Old University" was built in the last third of the 19th century in neo-Gothic style. And knowledge has been intensively cultivated in this place since 1527. In that year, the Hessian Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous founded the Marburg University - the oldest Protestant university to be founded, which has survived to this day. The former Dominican monastery was chosen by Philip to be its first building.
If the first 17 teachers and 88 students got along well with the space, it soon became quite tight. In addition, the old buildings fell into disrepair over the centuries. The new building, built in several construction phases according to plans by the architect Carl Schäfer from the years 1873–1891, was therefore welcomed with joy. Today it houses the Department of Protestant Theology.
