More and more Galloways are used in nature management. In earlier times, large and small grazers formed the landscape. However, many of these wild grazers are extinct in our regions. Instead, cattle breeds that are closely related to their wild ancestors are now being introduced. The Galloway is a bovine with many primitive features. It is a social animal that lives in a herd and can be released in small groups in nature reserves. It is very well adapted to outdoor life and requires little care. For example, it does not need help with calving, it does not need to be milked and it finds sufficient food, so that additional feeding is not necessary. Because it does not only eat grasses and grazes some parts more or less, the diversity of the landscape increases. Its friendly and quiet character is ideal in nature areas with a high number of visitors.

The Galloway is often described as a very old and original breed. It is said to be descended from a horned and black cattle that lived in Scotland since Celtic times. Its name is said to be due to the word Gallovid or Gaul, which means Gaulish and refers to the presence of this people in the far south of the Scottish Lowlands.
