History of the protected areas in the Rhine Delta.

The Rhine Delta is the largest wetland biotope conservation area on Lake Constance and stretches from the mouth of the Old Rhine through the mouth of the New Rhine to the Dornbirner Ach in Hard. Around 2000 hectares of shallow water, reed beds, wet meadows and alluvial forests are protected. It is also a breeding and resting area for birds that is of European importance. A nature reserve has been designated on the Austrian and Swiss sides, and in Vorarlberg there is also a Natura 2000 area (fauna-flora-habitat and bird protection), a Ramsar site.
