The quarry owner Bruno Hietzig (1858-1929) developed the first mechanical cable crane systems. These and other inventions made the rapid development of the granite industry in Upper Lusatia possible. Bruno Hietzig came up with the idea for the cable crane during a stay in Scotland. There he saw cable cars with wooden towers that were used to transport tree trunks. In 1901 the first German cable crane in steel construction was put into operation in the Thumitz am Klosterberg quarry. 279 meters long, blocks of stone weighing up to 5000 kilograms could be moved on the system.
