The memorial was unveiled on May 11, 1941 in honor of the German folk song composer Philipp Friedrich Silcher (1789–1860) on the Platanenallee on Tübingen's Neckar Island. It is a 5.7-meter-high sandstone sculpture designed by the Stuttgart artist Wilhelm Julius Frick (1884–1964).
