  • Tübingen (official name University Town of Tübingen) is a university town in the center of Baden-Württemberg. It is located on the Neckar River around 30 kilometers south of the state capital Stuttgart. The city is the seat of the Tübingen district and the administrative district of the same name and was the state capital of Württemberg-Hohenzollern from 1947 to 1952. It belongs to the Neckar-Alb region and the European metropolitan region of Stuttgart. Together with its eastern neighbor Reutlingen, it forms one of the 14 major centers in the state. In terms of population, Tübingen is the third largest medium-sized town in Baden-Württemberg after Ludwigsburg and Esslingen am Neckar. As the twelfth largest city in Baden-Württemberg, Tübingen has 92,811 inhabitants (December 31, 2022). Tübingen has been a large district town since April 1, 1956.With the Eberhard Karls University, founded in 1477, the city is one of the oldest German university towns. City life is strongly influenced by the approximately 28,700 students (as of winter semester 2022/23). Tübingen is therefore one of the youngest cities in Germany with an average age of around 40 years.
Tübingen is located in the middle Neckar valley between the northern Black Forest and the Swabian Alb. In Tübingen, the Goldersbach flows into the Ammer. This, like the Steinlach, also flows into the Neckar in Tübingen. In the center of the city are the Schlossberg and the Österberg, on the outskirts of the city are, among many others, the Schnarrenberg, the 475 m high Spitzberg, the local mountain of the Hirschau district, the Herrlesberg and the Härten. The lowest point in the Tübingen urban area is in the eastern Neckar valley at 307 m above sea level, the highest is the Hornkopf in the Schönbuch north of the Hagelloch district at 515.2 m. The Schönbuch Nature Park begins in the north of Tübingen. The Swabian Alb begins about 13 km (as the crow flies from Tübingen Mitte to Roßberg(tower) (869 m)) further southeast.
