The area's name, still in use today, indicates the former possessions of the Teutonic Order in Güglingen. In fact, the Teutonic Order, along with numerous monasteries and other institutions, can be documented as receiving tithes in the 16th century. The buildings surrounding the square bear witness to the various historical periods that give Güglingen its distinctive character: The remains of the old walls, now adorned with a picturesque, romantic "defensive" walkway, testify to the town's status as a city that adopted the Bering as its external symbol. The German Court was built by Duke Ludwig of Württemberg around 1570. The only remaining features of the complex are the ducal wine press with its band house and the tithe barn. The buildings were extensively renovated around 1980. The ducal wine press now houses a hotel, and the tithe barn a bank. Various casts of Roman stone monuments are embedded in the walls of the German Court.
