The Tower of London is arguably the most famous fortress in the world and has starred in numerous films. Built by William the Conqueror in 1086, it has been part of British history ever since, having served as an armoury, zoo, treasury, prison and royal palace over time. Today, the British crown jewels are housed inside, which can be admired by visitors. Definitely worth seeing.

The Tower of London, with history oozing out of every crack in the mortar... where to begin?!

If you're visiting the Tower, and you want to see the Crown Jewels, arrive at opening time, ignore all the tours and go straight to the Crown Jewels- then see the rest of the tower after that...you'll avoid all the queues.
