The tunnel is named after the Gießmann brothers, Moritz is named as the initiator in the old local chronicle from 1930, and Max is named in more recent sources. The brothers were owners of the Friedensburg, the vineyard and the bath hotel. What is certain, at least, is that after extensive preparatory work, the tunnel boring began in September 1876 and was completed on July 20, 1878. The tunnel is 369 meters long and two meters high, the gradient has a slope of 1: 180. In the course of the tunnel, numerous water veins are taken up.
